Section 3: Understanding the role of Identity in Purpose
True identity transcends social markers and lies in your eternal connection to the Creator. When you see yourself as the Creator sees you, you unlock the greatness designed for your life.
Who you really are cannot be seen by the natural eye. Remember, eyes have not seen and ears have not heard what your Creator has in store for you. To truly discover your purpose, it is essential that you do not rely on the opinions of others to develop a knowledge of yourself. It does not matter what your past has looked like or if you are the black sheep of the family. It also doesn't matter if people think you are too fat, too thin, too short or too slow to realize the dreams that The Creator has placed on the inside of you, all that matters is that you have been called by The One that created you.
Of the five questions of the human heart, the two that address identity are “Who am I?” And “Where am I from?” “Who am I?” begs the question of individual/personal identity and “Where am I from?,” addresses heritage. Your identity and your heritage are both more than skin deep.
Identity is much more than your nationality, race, creed, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs or gender. If we limit identity to social markers that are constrained in time and space then we fail to acknowledge the eternal parts of our being. As beings created in the image and likeness of Our Creator we are so much more than the physical and tangible parts of ourselves. We are spirit, we have souls, and were designed with eternity in mind. Therefore, our true identity must be anchored in more than the things of this world and our natural life.
If we focus on the finite elements of our being, and anchor our identity in the superficial or the limited, we will neglect to recognize the most important part of ourselves which is our spirit man. Our true identity comes from the Source of our being, our true identity is the truth that we are children of the Creator. When you are in relationship with the Creator, then we begin to become exposed to our true identity. Most of the time it is difficult for us to truly accept the greatness, strength and resilience that being made in the image and likeness of the divine affords us.
Our introduction to ourselves through fellowship with the Creator is often a surprise to us. We are so much more than what meets the eye, or that we can conceive of. Thus, it is essential that we meet ourselves and see ourselves the way that the Creator sees us because if we don’t, we run the risk of underestimating ourselves and underestimating the purpose for our lives. Without this divine relationship with our Source, we would fail to see the supernatural, and eternal parts of our identity.
One of the key parts of your identity is knowing that you are victorious. You cannot have a defeated mentality and live a victorious life. You must then have faith that you will discover and unleash your purpose. You were programmed for success with its fruits built into your DNA. In understanding your identity you embrace the fact that your birthright is a divine assurance. As an heir your true identity is wrapped up in the Creator’s promises and declarations about you. You are entitled to say “I am” in front of any of these promises or declarations about mankind and it is considered truth. Remember, in spite of what the facts might be, like a recent diagnosis, debt or loss, it is truth that prevails. Who are you? You are an eternal being and heir of the Creator. Where are you from? Eternity. These two answers push you to think beyond the traditional and embrace all that is possible for you, your life and your purpose.
Watch this final installment of the anchor teaching for the course and see examples of people that the world may not have deemed fit to fulfill their God-given purpose. Just like them you have been chosen and are free of the opinions of others.
