Section 4: The Significance of a Commitment to Your Work
In Module 3, we learned the difference between your job and your work. We also learned about how physically draining or discouraging doing a job that does not align with your work can be. Therefore, it is important that you commit to finding your “work” and not settling for a “job.” Work is a gift from the Creator. Every meaningful assignment throughout history requires “work.” Adam was called to tend to garden, name the creatures, have dominion and to be fruitful and multiply. Noah worked to build the ark. Joseph worked to provide for Egyptians during a seven-year famine, and Solomon worked to build the Temple. Work is honorable and work profits the worker. Even if no one ever pays you, your work profits you because you discover what you can do.
When you stop working for money, you’ll discover the blessing of work. Work profits you by enhancing your self-esteem. Where work releases potential; a job merely provides a paycheck. Your job is what they pay you to do, your work is what you were born to do. Work arises out of a desire to contribute to the world’s wealth and well-being by giving of yourself. Furthermore, when we work, we should labor. Labor isn’t so much about doing things, as delivering hidden stuff- the hidden stuff on the inside of us that is full of greatness. This hidden stuff is your gift. Unlike skills that you are trained to do, you are born with your gifts. There is a reason a woman labors, to bring new life and new purpose into the world through a new baby. Laboring is key to work. A fantasy is merely a dream without labor. When you lock yourself into your dreams and fantasies, you limit yourself. Do not kill your purpose by making it a thing of fantasy, you must labor to fulfill your purpose and bring to pass all you were created to be.
Every job, no matter how much you dislike it, has the potential to be work for you. Work is more important than the job. Hence, you must learn to condition yourself for the discipline required to actualize your gifts and talents through your work. Remember, work brings potential to pass, and without work, you cannot accomplish anything. Work is the key to your personal progress, productivity, and fulfillment. Therefore, regardless of the job you find yourself in, prioritize finding work!
The Creator assigns you work so that you can release your possibilities and abilities by putting forth the effort to accomplish each task. The responsibilities given to you are presented to provoke your potential and to challenge you to try new things. Until you stop being a reluctant worker, you will miss the vitality and meaning that was intended to illuminate your life through your work. As you take the opportunity to focus on the results of your labor, instead of the losses in your life that tempt you to feel unlovable and incapable, your estimation of yourself will grow, and so will your self-esteem. You must audibly and/or visibly remind yourself that you are a solution. Say, “I am a solution!” Say it daily, and go about being a solution for yourself and others through your work.
